Rereading old Skype convos, found a mini rant about a really nasty trend in “real” Calthazar fic.
So we all know that wonderful genre of Destiel fic feat Balthazar as Cass’ ex-worst person ever, but there’s actually a distressingly similar genre of endgame Calthazar.
I’m talking about first time (usually) fics where Balthazar tells Cass he loves him and wants to have sex, Cass says something like “I can’t” or “we shouldn’t” or just plain “no”
and Balthazar’s just like, “We totally should and also I want to and you know you want it, too,” and just keeps “““““gently”““““ and “””””lovingly””””” pestering Cass until he says “yes” and of course Cass really did want it and happily ever after and all that.
(Different versions include HS/college Calthazar with Balthazar pressuring Cass to drink/go to parties/etc, for example.)
Like yeah, they had the angel equivalent of a deeply abusive upbringing, there’s a lot of shame and other baggage attendant, some of which Balthazar has indeed unpacked earlier than Cass, and it makes sense he would want to help the person he loves, who “showed us we could do anything” the same way.
Which translates to Balthazar like, “I know what’s good for you and I’m going to make you understand that. With “““““love”““““!”
Which brings me back to those Destiel fics where Balthazar has become Dean Winchester.
Listen, if I wanted to read that shit, I’d read Destiel fic.
Raise your hand if you actually remember that the full line goes “you showed us we could do anything, so I’m trying everything.”
The fact that “everything” translates in fandom to “sex, drugs, and rock’n’roll” is partly the writers’ fault, since that’s all they ever really showed us, but that doesn’t make the total lack of creativity in fic any less disappointing.
Where are all the fics where Cass says “no (maybe “not now,” or “not yet,” or maybe just “no”), but show me something else”
so Balthazar takes him diving to the very bottom of the Mariana Trench because the water pressure can’t hurt them and feels AMAZING.theamazingdalet:
Everything:
“I wasn’t sure about it at first either, but I found it can be quite enjoyable. You’re not even a little curious?” Balthazar asked bringing a glass of champagne to his lips. Across from him Castiel started to fiddle with his fork pushing around a bite of his mille-feuille on his plate.
“I don’t know,” Castiel spoke slowly. He looked up, fork stilling as he gazed across the city. He could see the Eiffel Tower in the distance. They were eating breakfast on the balcony of Balthazar’s apartment in Paris. One of a number of dwellings the other angel had acquired during his time on Earth. “I’ve liked the other things we’ve tried,” he stated. He and Balthazar had done a lot of things together including, over the last year, trying a number of human things. Such as eating and drinking though they did not need to. Castiel had found that he liked desserts and pastries and while he wasn’t a fan of alcohol he really liked coffee and orange juice – together. What they were speaking of then was not food or drink. It was sex. Castiel shifted in his seat and looked down at his plate again. The mille-feuille was good. Castiel never would of tried it if Balthazar hadn’t offered it to him. Would trying sex because Balthazar proposed it really be that different? Castiel’s brow furrowed and his lips pulled down into a slight frown. Trying the mille-feuille hadn’t caused a knot to tie in his gut. Nothing he and Balthazar had tried before had made him anxious or uncomfortable, but the thought of having sex…“But this…carnal pleasure its…”
“Paltry,” Balthazar stated. Castiel looked up at him. “What is sex to say a picnic on one of Saturn’s moons?” Balthazar reached across the table and took hold of one of Castiel’s hands, gently cradling it in both of his, “I’m trying everything because you showed me I could do anything, and I want to share everything with you, Cassie, but we won’t do anything you don’t want to. There will always be other things we can do instead.”
“So what do you suggest we do instead?” Castiel asked, squeezing Balthazar’s hand. The hum of worry was gone from his grace.
Balthazar grinned, “when was the last time you visited the Mariana Trench?”
“A few centuries. Why?” Castiel asked, curiosity glinting in his eyes.
“I’m suggesting that once breakfast is finished we go diving. What do you think?” Balthazar asked.
“I think that sounds amazing,” Castiel smiled.
