It’s 9.14pm when the front door finally swings open.
“Cassie–!” Balthazar crows in triumph, “I did it!”
The crisp night air is visible in his puffs of laughter as he shucks off his coat and scarf, delicately balancing the food parcel on his way into the kitchen.
“I won’t lie,” Balthazar beams as he passes Cass, seated patiently at the bar, “it took about six stops at this time of day, and they were a little surprised you wanted it on white bread with mustard, but for you, darling, I would not relent.”
Cass laughs softly as Balthazar carefully unpacks his meal, sliding it onto a plate and the plate across the counter. He takes a seat across from Cass, a sigh escaping from behind his eager smile as he finally relaxes.
“There it is, my love,” Balthazar gestures to the plate, a hint of pride in his voice. “Your abalone.”
Cass meets Balthazar’s devoted gaze with a loving smile, his shoulders rising in a deep sigh of affection as he reaches over and lays his hand on Balthazar’s.
“‘A baloney’ sandwich, Balthazar. I said ‘a baloney’ sandwich.”
