((FINALE SPOILERS)): I like to imagine Cas and Balthazar meeting up in the place wherever meetings of the Dead Angels' Society are held, spotting each other from across the room, and first sharing a long and knowing look that is equal parts remorse and gratitude...

oh my god cass is dead again. i mean it was only a matter of time, but. jesus.

i’m sorry, i used to think a lot about cass & balthazar meeting post s6. in fact, it’s one of the first ever calthazar posts on my main (and you already found ensardens’ beautiful post). i wish i could appreciate this image more right now but now i’m just scared they’ll actually bring balthazar back

thanks so much for the message tho, really ♥

[EDIT] as an aside, i had to look up s12 info to answer this ofc, and i had the immense pleasure of reading the phrase “castiel knocks sam and dean out” in reference to the previous episode

The Man Who Would Be King (Supernatural, 2011)

i heard there were deleted scenes with balthazar in 6x20 so i thought i’d recreate them

Once upon a time, a young knight slew his wicked king to protect his homeland.

As punishment, the king’s sorcerer cursed the young knight. He carved out the knight’s heart, and locked it in a box, to make him a prisoner for eternity.

One day…
…a strange thief, who stole many things, made away with the box, and returned it to the young knight.

But the curse was not so easily broken.

        What will he do now?

[identity profile] theamazingdalet.livejournal.com

or how about an au where the self you see in the mirror is from a parallel universe

but some wires got crossed and cass & balthazar see each other instead

[identity profile] theamazingdalet.livejournal.com

remember that writing prompts post that’s like “an immortal and a time traveler fall in love. wherever the time traveler ends up the immortal is there to bring them up to speed”

anyways balthazar’s the immortal and cass is the time traveler

[identity profile] theamazingdalet.livejournal.com

now i’m off on a mental tangent and wondering how cass explained balthazar & rachel’s deaths to the rest of the army back in s6

rachel’s is a little easier cause cass came back genuinely wounded but balthazar? there was no one else in the room but there were angels everywhere around who felt the blast like

like i doubt they’d either believe or cass would try to tell them that balthazar tried to kill him

did he tell them balthazar was a traitor? did they accept that or could they maybe make some guesses as to why?

or did he say nothing because they asked no questions, which would be sketchy as hell. i mean i know it’s what angels are trained to do but like. unquestioningly following orders being Bad was kind of a major thing the rebels were about
[identity profile] theamazingdalet.livejournal.com

posting this separately cause i don’t wanna derail happy posts about balthazar being mentioned but

that quote from the ep a while ago, “balthazar. uriel. […] both dead now. you had a hand in that too”

is just such a perfect example of how the writers think of cass. he deliberately kills someone (all plotholes aside)? his fault. someone saves his life when he’s about to be killed by someone who had already murdered seven of their siblings?

also his fault. “you had a hand in that too” two completely different things conflated as though they are exactly the same

cass is written as though absolutely everything bad that happens in his vicinity is something he needs to feel guilty about. if anyone dies near him he “had a hand in that” and he should’ve done better

but he’s never gonna be allowed to bc the sense i get from the spn writers these days is that cass IS guilt. he exists to be crushed under the weight of his guilt and as long as he keeps standing they have to keep piling it on, even if it makes no sense at all
[identity profile] theamazingdalet.livejournal.com

cass had never been to school by the time he met balthazar bc of his illness. if the body swap and physiotherapy and all went well his parents were hoping he’d start 3rd grade with the other kids his age

at any rate, they got pretty attached to balthazar in the hospital as cass’ first best friend, and he got to see cass’ cyberbrain before it was installed in his new body

afterwards, back in his room with mom&mum, balthazar gets distracted eating dinner, apparently trying to get his eyeballs to do a barrel roll

“what’re you doing” asks mom

“if i look backwards i can see my brain too”

“not quite, love” says mom, trying not to laugh “it’ll still be too dark in there”

“oh yeah”

so he grabs his toy flashlight and jams it against his nostrils like

“balthazar!”

[identity profile] theamazingdalet.livejournal.com

a ghost in the shell au about cass & balthazar escaping the american empire together

they’re childhood friends, they met in the hospital where cass got his first full prosthetic body, then lost contact a decade later when cass was forcibly recruited into public security by michael’s side of the family, bc no one makes a better cyber soldier than a full cyborg

and cass tries to not even think about balthazar until he’s become the best hacker on record next to michael, until he can meet with balthazar even in public with absolutely no trace of it recorded on any camera or in any cyberbrain

and he teaches him everything. balthazar has only minimal cyberbrain enhancements, and no protheses, and with cass’ instructions he just starts taking apart all traces of their existence, piece by piece

and michael catches on eventually, except he shot himself in the foot years ago, first by making cass disappear from the public record himself when he was “recruited,” second by outfitting him with a new mass-market shell. easy to blend in on the outside, and custom engineering on the inside to make him unique

but mass-market is mass-market, and if you’re good, if you’re really good, if you’re the second best cyber hacker in the country, you can reverse engineer the customization until you are completely indistinguishable from the other 750,000 of you in circulation

finally michael confronts cass in person, cass who now only barely exists as a mundane private citizen, and threatens balthazar instead. and cass just looks at him and frowns

“who?”

because balthazar hasn’t just disappeared from the public record, he’s disappeared from cass’ too. as michael dives into cass’ brain for evidence, he finds all of his memories of balthazar have been overwritten. there was no other boy in the hospital, no classmate, no friend, no one

balthazar only exists as a name in michael’s head. cass could never hack michael, but he doesn’t need to. michael never spared a second thought for cass’ life. he has not a single memory of balthazar to make his case. he can’t even describe him

and cass walks away

encrypted fragments in his brain, none of them even a full sentence on their own, start popping up, telling him to turn, to keep going, and he just keeps walking, walking across the city, which does not record him passing, all the way to the airstrip

by the time he boards his plane, there was never a “castiel” to begin with

there’s a blond stranger in the seat next to him. once they’re in the air, the stranger plugs himself into a film, smiling, enjoying himself

cass is still nervous. michael’s word alone carries weight. as long as he knows cass exists, there’s always a risk

once they’ve crossed the border, the stranger turns to him and asks if he’s all right. cass smiles and deflects

“you look like you’re enjoying yourself”

the stranger offers cass a wire to share the film. cass accepts and plugs himself in

and suddenly

i mean i know raphael’s never coming back bc the showrunners are just as racist & sexist as the fans but

i like to think that if he DID he might actually approach cass with some understanding?

imagine raphael laying low for a bit instead of making an automatic power move, esp when he realizes cass is still alive

but then actually catching up on what cass has been doing, and trying to do, and what he’s been through and WHY

like i’m sure raphael could appreciate why cass opposed him after s5, even if he would not tolerate it, but even if he didn’t then i’m sure he could and if for once an archangel might be willing to shut up and listen for a bit they could do so much together, raphael has the experience that cass doesn’t, he’s the rock

just imagine the old power and the new will, and what they could do for each other and their family

at the very least, just imagine raphael being the one to finally offer cass sanctuary
[identity profile] theamazingdalet.livejournal.com

okay listen i gotta go to bed but i just bought grimes’ “art angels” album and so far? this is literally the soundtrack to cass saying goodbye to dean and hitting the open sky with balthazar and hannah 4ever after

special mention goes to:

  • flesh without blood

  • california

  • venus fly

  • butterfly

  • realiti (balthazar pov –> cass)

“Balthazar!” Cass called, waving him down to a short stack of crates with a small, white and brown bag tossed on top.

“This was in the bag…” Cass looked uneasy as he handed Balthazar a card.

“Hey–!” Santa grabbed it from him, glaring at it; her picture was on it, as though it were a trading card.

“Ah, you noticed,” Ace approached them, two cards in hand. “These were in the bags under the stairs.”

“Quatre,” Balthazar murmured, “and…Duo.”

They were silent for a moment, until Cass spoke up, tugging at his sleeves.

“When were these taken…?” he asked slowly. “How long has Zero been watching us…?”

“It’s just a headshot,” Santa muttered. “I can’t even tell what I’m wearing, or I’d maybe be able to guess the when.”

Balthazar glanced about the room, scattered with the small bags. One of them, no doubt, would hold his own photo…and Castiel’s. They resumed their search rather chilled.

The bags, only four in total, were exhausted soon enough, leaving them to pry open every crate and barrel within reach to find all nine cards.

Balthazar and Castiel heaved the lid off a large box to the right of the entryway, and there they were, laying eerily side by side.

Castiel watched, face full of concern, as Balthazar slowly lifted the card with his own photo.

Balthazar bit back a shudder, wracking his brain for something less than completely alarmed to say.

“At least they got my good side,” he muttered, turning the card over as though it interested him only casually. It was weak, but Cass seemed relieved, leaning into the crate for his own photo.

“Well?” he held it out to Balthazar, his tone expectant.

Balthazar blinked.

“…well?” he tilted his head. Cass frowned at him.

“Did they get my good side?”

Balthazar laughed. “Oh, dear, you don’t have a bad side.”

Cass smiled, satisfied.

“Welcome back,” the Director motions 163 to the seat in front of his desk as he speaks. “Between you and 99, our completion rate has jumped 13%.”

“Thank you, sir,” 163 crosses his legs with a small, proud smirk, which the Director promptly returns.

“We’ve been watching your time trials.” The Director leans back in his seat for a long moment, studying 163 carefully as though sizing him up, then abruptly straightens.

“Agent 163, congratulations,” he says, “the board and I have promoted you to Rank 2. From now on, you’re on doubles.”

“With 99?” asks 163 straightaway.

“No, not her,” the Director surprises him. There’s no one else who can match up, 163 knows. “Listen-”

With a flick of his hand, 163’s file is projected between them.

“Your statistics have shown us a potential for growth we hadn’t expected for years,” says the Director, his eyes following the graph. “With your data, the board and I have decided on an…experimental course of action for our 600th unit.”

“You don’t mean-”

The Director nods once, emphatic. “We’re birthing a new agent directly into Rank 2, using your genetic data. If this works, agent, you’ll be the new code for the entire Rank 2 line.”

“And agent 600…will be my partner?” 163 asks, stunned.

“That’s right,” says the Director solemnly. “Make us proud.”

“I will, sir,” 163 assures him.

Balthazar straightened up as well, but a sizzling sound from just behind him caught his attention.

Cass had lain his frozen pork prize on the grill and was contentedly cooking it, turning it over with the handle of a ladle he had snatched from the nearby stand.

“I still don’t think we’ll be able to pull the paper out,” he told Balthazar. “We just need to be able to cut the meat a little.”

“Cut… ah-” Balthazar retrieved the large knife from the table by the entrance and approached Lotus and Santa.

“We need to sharpen this,” he explained. “Any ideas?”

Lotus glanced down at the counter in between them.

“Isn’t that a whetstone right there?”

“What do you do that you recognize a whetstone on sight?” Santa asked for both of them. Lotus smirked at her before offering the block to Balthazar.

“Do you know how to use it?”

Balthazar shook his head and handed her the rusty knife. Skillful and efficient, the drew the knife over and over across the stone, grinding the rust away bit by bit.

“This is still old,” she said as she finished, “but you could cut something soft with it, I’m sure.”

“Like undercooked pork?” he asked. Lotus gave him a curious look, then followed his gaze to Castiel, waving them over to the grill.

“Watch your fingers,” he warned, gently gripping the tag as Balthazar cut through the meat.

rereading part 2 chaps and “frozen pork prize” is still my favourite line

The monitor had powered up, the screen glowing white for several seconds before fading into…

“…I’m not sure what this is,” muttered Balthazar, with Ace looking over his shoulder.

The screen showed a grid, with a number of brown and grey tiles standing out. To the middle left was a single, yellow tile with a red dot at its center, and the entire right column was made up of similar, paler yellow tiles. In the top right corner was an icon shaped like a coffin, and in the top left sat the words “Moves 50/50”.

“It’s the control panel for…that,” Santa, with an odd smile on her face, pointed to the ground floor past the fence.

Suddenly, the grid on the monitor made perfect sense. He hadn’t been able to tell from eye level, but the wooden crates and metal boxes behind the fence were arranged exactly as the tiles on the screen. Only an odd, yellow device with a red bulb on its head stood out.

“And what is…that?

Santa and Castiel began to laugh, looking down at a stiff piece of paper Santa held in her hands. She cleared her throat authoritatively, laughed again, and straightened up to speak.

“It’s the Pushmaster 5000.”

“No.”

Santa broke down, weakly pushing the card into Balthazar’s hands as Cass clutched her arm, trying to stifle his laughter with his sleeve.
